Why is my car's fuel-injector performance so low?
My car's fuel-injector performance is terrible, even though I can hear a rich, almost metallic roar when I turn on the engine, when the turbo kicks in. It sounds terrible.
The closest thing I can find is that the injectors are jetting tiny amounts of fuel. My mechanic, however, says there is no problem with the injectors, and that the car has such a low fuel flow rate that the injectors are just struggling to keep up.
My question is, does the injectors actually have a jetting problem, or is he wrong?
A:
This is a classic symptom of "wet plugs".
If you check for fuel on the plugs, you can see if there's any. If there's too little fuel then the car will have a misfire (only the outside of the plug will light up). If it's too much, it will run too lean.
This is the case with lots of cars. The cheap ones don't have any kind of technology to prevent this from happening.
The reason it's so hard to determine the problem is because it's not really a bad symptom. It can occur for a number of reasons.
You can see fuel on the plugs. If you have excessive fuel, you can see it pooling in the trough of the plug.
If you don't have fuel in the trough, then you could have a plugged piston.
If you do have fuel in the trough, but there's no vapor coming out of the base of the plug, then you can have a plugged/caked carb.
If you have a burnt out plug, you can see it. The metal that's been burnt off can still light the plug, but there's nothing left in the trough be359ba680
